Incredibly unique and eye-opening experience! - We had an incredible experience at Uros Samaraña Uta Lodge. Uros is unlike any place I've ever been or even imagined. Cesar and his family were very kind.... read more kind and happy to share all about their experiences growing up and living on Lake Titicaca.
The room was beautiful and had everything you needed. Sure, it was basic, but you're staying on a floating grass island in the middle of a giant lake. Keep this in mind and know what to expect! The floor gives a little when you step on it. The islands are masterfully constructed, but they're not terrestrial.
César's tour blew us away. He explained the island-making process (with miniature models!) as well as the culture and customs of the people who live there. He had a unique perspective, having been born and raised there but also having attended school in Puno. The people's ingenuity was truly incredible; they are essentially part of the lakes' ecosystem, maintaining its balance while hunting ducks and fishing.
As I said, this place is unlike anything I've seen before. If you go in with an open mind, you'll definitely appreciate the ingenuity, knowledge, and kindness of the Uros people. Highly recommended!
Once-in-a-lifetime experience We had an incredible stay at Uros Saramaña Uta Lodge. Cesar and his family are incredibly friendly hosts, and the setting is unlike anything you'll ever experience.
Born... read more Born and raised on the Uros floating island community, Cesar is a deeply informed ambassador of this community's history, its way of life, its values, and the pressures it faces. Cesar shared this perspective with us throughout our stay. A highlight of our visit was the several-hour tour Cesar took us to visit other islands and learn more about how the islands are built and how the community organizes to protect itself and ensure its continued prosperity.
Please note that when you stay on a Uros island, you are staying on a communally constructed floating island made of totora reeds, an aquatic plant that grows on the surface of Lake Titicaca. The reeds are woven and layered over another layer of reeds to construct the surface of each island. These islands are anchored by rope to the lake floor. They float. Therefore, you will feel slight movements throughout the day, and the “floor” you are walking on will feel uneven and tight at times. If you understand that this is part of the experience, you will see that this is a feature, not a bug.
Come to your stay in Uros with an open mind and you'll leave amazed by the ingenuity of the Uros community, and with an even deeper respect for their commitment to a unique way of life.
An unforgettable experience. - Staying at this lodge is the best way to get to know the Uros Islands. Joel and Lucy were the best hosts to us, always attentive to our needs.... read more While we were staying at their lodge, the reservation includes excursions to learn about the local customs. The room is very comfortable and located in an idyllic setting. The food was homemade and delicious, prepared by the owners. At night, they provide hot water bottles to keep you warm. We would definitely come back.
Outstanding to choose - I don't know what else I can add to the already glowing reports, but they are all accurate. Cesar and his family are special people and we were lucky to have found this... read more Great place. We came during the coldest weather, but the rooms and all the accommodations kept us warm and comfortable. The hosts don't impose on you; they give you options and let you make your own decisions. No pressure.
The rooms were beautiful. The food was exceptional. I don't know how they do it. But my favorite thing was that the beds were the most comfortable I've ever been in. Every single guest we spoke to here said the same thing.
So relaxing and informative at the same time. I'd refer you to all the other glowing reviews. They're all spot on.
A once-in-a-lifetime experience! - We had a lovely stay with Cesar and Lucy at Uros Samarana. The bedroom offers a fantastic and restful view of the lake. Sitting on the private terrace in front is so... read more Wonderfully quiet and relaxing. The amenities are basic but clean. Cesar took us and the other guests on a tour of the neighboring Uros islands. We stopped at one where five families lived, where we learned the history of the Uros and an explanation of how the islands are built and function. Little kittens looked at us curiously, as did two little girls. The islanders offered cute handicrafts for purchase. We highly recommend a stay at Uros Samarana; it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
